Friday October 11 is National Coming Out Day
The LGBT community celebrates October 11 as National Coming Out Day (NCOD). NCOD is an internationally observed civil awareness day celebrating individuals who publicly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender—coming out regarding one's sexual orientation and/or gender identity being akin to a cultural rite of passage for LGBT people. Friday marks the 31st year since the first National Coming Out Day commemorating the anniversary of the landmark National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987. The foundational NCOD belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.
