Filter your drinking water and eliminate plastic water bottles!

Image
I have been giving thought to how to reduce my personal use of plastic items. I have been providing cases of bottled water to an elderly relative who needs to drink water on a regular basis to prevent dehydration. This results in bags of empty plastic bottles which must be recycled. And it is questionable whether our recycled items are actually being recycled at this time or just ending up in a land fill since China has made its import rules for accepting plastics from the U.S. more strict. I found an inexpensive drinking water filter system at Home Depot that costs under $200 for everything which includes a filtered water faucet that is mounted next to the kitchen faucet. There are many different types of systems with from 1-4 cartridges ranging from under $100 to over $400 that I have seen at Home Depot, Lowes and on Amazon. I preferred a simple, single-cartridge system with filtered water faucet. You can also connect the filter directly to your cold water tap, but then you are a...

All are invited to our Sierra Club 4th Thursday movie night as it returns this month with a 2014 Australian documentary Earth on Fire .  This documentary was a feature on the Australian TV series Catalyst which is similar to our NOVA series on PBS. Earth on Fire  explains why we have a worldwide rise of mega-fires and  how this rise is going to impact life as we know it throughout the world. The film is particularly prophetic because it aired before the mega-fires of recent years including (to list just a few) - Indonesia (2015), California Camp Fire (2018), Siberia (2019), and the Australia bushfires (2019-20)  Meet for drinks, snacks, and conversation on Thursday night at 7:00; movie starts at 7:30. Beat Plastic Pollution Campaign

Image
UULALA is beginning a campaign to reduce the use of plastic water bottles. Pollution by singe-use plastics is a big problem worldwide. It is found in the deepest parts of the oceans, sickens and kills birds and sea creatures and litters our beaches. If you use a reusable water bottle, you will soon be able to refill your bottle with filtered water at church. Alternatives to plastic cups and straws are also available. TAKE A SELFIE WITH YOUR REUSABLE STRAW, CUP OR BOTTLE AND EMAIL IT TO OUR BLOG. WE WILL PUT YOUR NAME IN THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT SERVICE :-) THANK YOU! --- Social Concerns Committee
