Sunday, October 27th, 2019:
Last Sunday's Service was our last for the month of October based on the Democracy theme. Scott Ferguson led the service and the presentation 'Democracy and Faith' emphasized that while we may have different political beliefs, we share many basic values and need each other's love and support to thrive. You can find the October 27th Order of Service and sermon HERE.

Abigail's Trash Collection event
Abigail Choisser led last Sunday's block trash cleanup at 5pm. It was a lot of fun talking politics with her while we collected. Her enthusiasm is contagious! We picked up two bags of trash in the block surrounding the Church building. She has also volunteered to make a plaque containing our new logo for the lectern. Abigail was caught being awesome! Diane Kirksey, who is subleasing space for her events in our church building, had her 'Compassionate Communication Meet and Greet House-Warming' at 5:30 pm on Sunday. Scott, Jackie and Abigail attended. We discussed ways in which we might make learning Compassionate Communications fun, such as GROKing, role-playing, games, and flash mobs. Her emphasis is on teaching us how to communicate with each other in a compassionate, non-violent way. If you are on Facebook, you can view her FB CC Page HERE or do a FB search for @CompassionateLafayette. Thanks, Diane!
Monday, October 28th:
Book Study! Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg
Diane had her book reading using the text 'Nonviolent Communcation' by Marshall Rosenberg. Here is her FB event description of this weekly event:
'We will read the book, together and separately.(Free Download available) Usually one chapter per week. Some chapters require more than one meeting to cover. Read before the meeting, take notes or highlight and then share insights at the meeting. Don't worry if you miss a meeting, you are always welcome back. Making the effort is all it takes. $1 donation suggested.'
Her next session is on Monday, November 4th at 6 pm in the church building.

Tuesday, October 29th:
Facing Death With Life (a UU Tapestry of Faith Curriculum)
This is a new program being offered by Diane. Here is her FB event description of this weekly event:
'This program facilitates a process of personal reflection, learning, and spiritual growth focused on the topic of death and dying. It brings death, dying, and grief into the light of our daily lives. It includes sociological information and reflection, theological reflection, personal and shared narrative, creative expression, journaling, and practical learning and preparation. It helps participants move from viewing death as an abstract concept to developing a personal recognition of its meaning in their life, with the goal that all who participate in the program find a closer and more comfortable relationship with their own inevitable death.'
Her next session is on Tuesday, October 29th at 6 pm in the church building.

Saturday, November 2nd:
Nel Hahn, a local attorney and immigrant advocate, is asking that we support the 11am rally at the Richwood Correctional Facility in Monroe, LA at 180 Pine Bayou Circle
Richwood, Louisiana on Saturday in support of the families of detained refugees being held there. This is the detention center where Roylan Hernandez-Diaz (pictured above) committed suicide after being held there for four months and being denied asylum. If you are interested in attending, Martha Alquera of the Louisiana Immigrants Rights Colaition and Nel Hahn have offered to help arrange transportation. Scott Ferguson will have access to a 5-passenger SUV and plans on attending also. You may contact him via email at justice@uulala.org if you need a ride. While this is not an official UULALA coalition event voted on by the membership, Scott asks that you participate if you are able to do so. Thank you.

Early Voting on Saturday, November 2nd , and 4th-9th for the Runoff elections. Election day Nov 16. Scott Ferguson has found that the Geaux Vote app is very helpful for easy access to YOUR ballot. We will be choosing Governor, Sec. of State, and City-Parish President if you live in Lafayette Parish. More at https://voterportal.sos.la.gov/

Native American Culture Day af Vermilionville!
"Louisiana’s Native American tribes and tribal communities sharing their living culture through crafts, music, dance, storytelling, and other cultural exchange."
Sunday, November 3rd:
Our theme for November is Mission and Vision. Mission asks, “Why do we exist?” “What is our purpose?” “Whom do we serve?” Vision asks, “What is the picture of the future that we want to create?” “What do we want to become?” Mission is a congregation’s North Star. Vision describes the distant horizon envisioned. Both are essential. Some say that the mission of our congregations is to transform people who will transform the world.
Hunter Miller will be presenting one of our Touchstones sermons by Rev. Joseph Boyd titled 'Loss of Vision'. We all have 'turning points' in our lives -- disillusionment. These times can be difficult and uncomfortable. But, they are not necessarily a bad thing. The end result may be enlightenment that has the potential to improve your and others' lives! If you are unable to attend, you may view the sermon HERE. Potluck dinner after the Service!
Come visit us for coffee and fellowship!
