Dear Beloveds, This Sunday, May 23, is Biodiversity Sunday, a new UU cultural tradition that the UU Ministry for Earth initiated in 2019. I envision that someday Biodiversity Sunday will be on the liturgical calendar for all UU congregations as a special day to honor the Web of Live on Earth! This date was chosen because of its proximity to Endangered Species Day (May 21) and World Biodiversity Day (May 22). Here are a few resources that you can enjoy individually, with your family/household or with your congregation: Jim Scott Sings for Endangered Species Day TODAY: Wednesday, May 19 at 5pm PT / 6 MT / 7 CT / 8 ET Musician, songwriter and environmental educator Jim Scott is offering a free virtual concert in honor of Endangered Species Day, which is always the third Friday of May! "The balance, the healing property of the planet is getting lost. A change of philosophy, theology, a change of heart is critically necessary. How do we get there? Money has blinded us to real value. I don't have the answers, I have some songs, though." Watch the concert livestream on Jim Scott's Facebook or YouTube. We Are All Connected: 7th Principle Butterfly Creepy Crawlies RE Lessons This ten-session curriculum is full of fun learning activities all about butterflies. Be a Guest Visitor for a Biodiversity Sunday Worship Service this Sunday! Sunday, May 23 at 9:30am PT / 10:30 MT / 11:30 CT / 12:30 ET
Come get inspired for planning your Biodiversity Sunday programs at your congregation next year by attending the Biodiversity Sunday program at Wildflower UU Church (Austin, TX) this Sunday, designed and led by UUMFE Program Director Aly Tharp (me). Biodiversity Sunday: Honoring Our Local Web of Life We live on a vibrant, brilliantly biodiverse planet, and we know that this life is sacred and in need of protection more than ever. This service will honor the biodiversity of Central Texas through stories, music, and reflections. Biodiversity Sunday is a new UU cultural practice being introduced by the UU Ministry for Earth, on the Sunday closest to Endangered Species Day (May 21) and World Biodiversity Day (May 22). https://zoom.us/j/96540474127?pwd=UmVoWE5yZmx0L3BlME1NRkw3UG44dz09 Phone Connections: 346-248-7799; Meeting ID: 965 4047 4127; Passcode: 703683 Make Some Endangered Species Eco-Artwork UUMFE held a phenomenal Procession of the Species at the UUA General Assembly in 2019 (see pictures), and will continue to grow the procession of species by encouraging UU eco-artwork focused on honoring the threatened and endangered species where you live. This can be visual art, puppetry, sculpture, prose, poetry, theater --- anything you want! Start by doing a little bit of research, picking a species to honor, and letting your creativity flow! Of course, community actions to help these species thrive are also greatly encouraged and applauded! Please also mark your congregational calendars now for next year's Biodiversity Sunday, May 22, 2022! UUMFE is aiming to engage hundreds of congregations in Biodiversity Sunday art builds to create eco-artwork honoring your local web of life, to be carried in a monumentally beautiful Procession of the Species at the UUA General Assembly in Portland, Oregon, June 22-26, 2022. Help bring Earth care to center stage with UUMFE at the first in-person GA in three years! Please send any pictures or files of your eco-artwork, or any other biodiversity focused activities you're doing this week to me at alytharp@uumfe.org. Thank you! In faith and solidarity, for all Life, Aly Tharp Program Director, UU Ministry for Earth |
